Unexpected Surprise on the Beach: Velella velella the Small Blue Jellyfish

jellyfish, man o war

As summer is coming to a close, we are trying to get in as many beach days as we can before the start of school next week.  A normal beach day had an odd turn as we discovered many beautiful small creatures littering the beach.

This blue beauty is called a Velella velella.  Related to the jelly fish and Man o War, it is often seen in warm and temperate waters in all the worlds oceans.  The last time they were seen washed up on Southern California beaches were about 8 years ago.

Bolsa Chica State Beach

The V. Velella, goes where the wind and tides carry them.  It was a great opportunity to teach my kids about this rare (to our beaches)creature.

It floats along the surface of the ocean while feeding on plankton with long tentacles that hang underneath.  They are often seen by sailors across the Pacific Ocean  but uncommon on our local beaches.

Bolsa Chica State Beach

What helps them sail across the ocean is a rigid "sail" upon its brilliantly colored back.  They have been known to strand themselves by the thousands and sometimes centimeters deep along the West Coast of North America from Brittish Columbia to California.  They have also been reported on the west coast of Ireland.

If you go to the beach in the next few weeks, be sure to keep an eye out for them!  The kids were excited to see something new, especially something so beautiful.

Beach, washed ashore

CAUTION:  While V. velella is not poisonous, everyone reacts to them differently and some may have a skin reaction, especially to the face.

DINOSAURS: Walking with Dinosaurs is Coming to the Honda Center! | @DinosLive #Anaheim #spon

I can't wait!  My children LOVE dinosaurs and there is an event next week that will make them sleepless with excitement!  Walking with Dinosaurs: Arena Spectacular!

The last time my Walking with Dinosaurs was in Northern California, my kids were in diapers and all of the shows sold out!  I can't wait to take my little dinosaur diggers to experience dinosaurs in the most realistic dinosaur experience ever!

Variety said, “The dinosaurs are stunning, life-size and faultlessly nimble. In act one, the beasts parade into the arena gnashing and cavorting as a safari-suited paleontologist describes their attributes … in the second half, the action cranks up, culminating in a spectacular clash as a T-rex mom defends her baby from predators. Sonny Tilders' triumphant creature design ensures ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ is a truly spectacular spectacular. It is everything a dino-phile could want.”

The show depicts the dinosaurs’ evolution with almost cinematic realism. WALKING WITH DINOSAURS THE ARENA SPECTACULAR has scenes of the interactions between dinosaurs, how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators.

Ten species are represented from the entire 200 million year reign of the dinosaurs. The show includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the terror of the ancient terrain, as well as the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Utahraptor from the awesome Cretaceous period. The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail. It took a team of 50 – including engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists and painters, and animatronic experts – a year to build the production.

The history of the world is played out with the splitting of the earth’s continents, and the transition from the arid desert of the Triassic period is given over to the lush green prairies and forces of the later Jurassic. Oceans form, volcanoes erupt, a forest catches fire -- all leading to the impact of the massive comet, which struck the earth, and forced the extinction of the dinosaurs.

This new show will have updated dinosaurs based on the latest scientific research including the likely feathering of some species.  Over eight million people have seen the show in 243 cities and over 2000 performances and I can't wait to add my family to those numbers!

During its North American tour (2007-2010), the production won the THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Touring Event and the Billboard Touring Award for Creative Content as well as the Pollstar Concert Industry Award for Most Creative Stage Production and the ILMC Arthur Award for Best in Show. The THEAs recognize excellence in the creation of compelling educational, historical, and entertainment projects; and both the Billboard Touring Award and the Pollstar Concert Industry Award recognize a show or tour that creatively expands what is offered on the road. The ILMC (International Live Music Conference) Arthur Award for Best in Show recognizes theatre shows and family entertainment.

Next week, Walking With Dinosaurs the Arena Spectacular is making an appearance at the Honda Center for only eight performances from September 3 to September 7th.  It will be at the Staples Center for eight shows from September 11 to September 15th.

KIDS CRAFT: Rocket Jumper: Easy, Quick and Cheap and Great for Space Parties

Last weekend we went to the Columbia Space Center and learned how to make a GREAT toddler + rocket!  My kids are 5 and 7 and they had a blast making and launching these inexpensive "Rocket Jumpers".

These rockets can be used on any surface and quick and cheap to make.  They jump to about 3-4 feet high and is safe for even the toddlers.

Things you need:

  • 2 Sturdy plastic cups
  • 2 Rubber bands
  • Tape
  • Coloring markers/crayons etc.
  • Rocket printable (free download below)

Step 1.

Cut (4) 1 inch slits in one of the plastic cups directly across from each other

Step 2.

Cut each of the rubber bands so you have 4 pieces

Step 3.

Tie a knot in each end of the rubber band pieces and slide them through the slits so the knots are on the outside and the rubber bands make an X inside

Step 4.

Tape the knots onto the cups

Step 5.

Have child color their rocket printable and cut out the rocket.  Tape the rocket onto the cup.

Step 6.

Place the "Rocket Jumper" onto the 2nd cup and hold it down by the edges of the bottom and let it fly!

I hope your kids have as much fun making these as mine did!  Feel free to print out as many rockets as you like for the project.  If you like this project, please share it with others.

MOVIE REVIEW: Island of Lemurs: Madagascar in IMAX w/ Ticket Giveaway! | @WarnerBrosEnt

Ring tailed Lemurs, Sifaka, movie
I've never been a huge fan of lemurs. It's not that I don't like them, I do but I've never looked at them and said, "Aw how cute!". So, when I walked into the movie theater and took my seat to watch Island of Lemurs: Madagascar in IMAX at the Irvine Spectrum, I wasn't sure what to expect.

I was also wondering if it would hold the attention of my 7 year old. Forty minutes later, we were both leaving with smiles on our faces and very entertained.

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is a documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman. These cute (yup, I called them cute) little furry animals were filmed in IMAX 3D which made it feel like the animals were in the theater. The visuals were amazing and makes you feel like you're right there in the mix with all the lemurs.

The spectacular 3D vision of the Madagascar landscape is stunning. I never knew Madagascar was so beautiful. Now I want to go visit! Watching the lemurs jump and dance across the screen, or rather right in front of us, was just as entertaining for everyone.

Kids were laughing and reaching out trying to grab a hold a lemurs tail while parents were amazed at the great athletic ability of lemurs among the trees and rocks. While all this was happening, the audience was learning about all the different types of lemurs on Madagascar, from the Verreaux's Sifaka to the Mouse lemur to the Ring-Tailed lemur.

I highly recommend taking the family out to see Island of Lemurs: Madagascar. Sure, it's a short film. Sure, its a documentary. Sure, IMAX can be a little pricey BUT it's definitely worth it. It has converted me to a lover of lemurs.

To find out more about the movie, follow on Island of Lemurs: Madagascar on Facebook!

Bring home a lemur friend along with a family (4) pack of IMAX tickets!  Enter below!

The school season is upon us and I don't know about you but I am still looking for new clothes for my kids!  While my kids use uniforms, they still need clothes for after school and weekends.

I am one to look for coupons because as my family will tell you, I am cheap.  I like a good deal.  What's wrong with that?  Doesn't everyone?  My favorite go-to store and online clothing place for my kids is The Children's Place.

The Children's Place always have the best weekly coupon's and also a really good clearance area.  Put the two together, you get really good savings!  I was invited to check out their fall fashions last week and see what deals I could find.  How about saving over $100 plus I got $80 Place Cash back!

First off I had a 30% off coupon from the weekly email.  Additionally, I got $10(Place Cash) for every $20 I spent.  Besides shopping in the clearance area's(up to 50% + 30% off) I also used my $100 gift-card.  My total?  $89 with $80 in Place Cash back in coupons!

My haul included:
  • 3 pairs of boot cut boys jeans($7.99+ discounts)
  • 4 pairs of cargo pants(camo, navy blue and khaki)
  • 6 boys graphic tee's ($5 each + discount)
  • 1 pair of boys camo shoes
  • 1 lace skirt
  • 2 lace tops
  • 5 leggings
  • 3 pairs of knee socks

This lace skirt and top were my daughters absolute favorite.

Too girly?  Want a little more of a tomboy look?  Check out the pink/camo look.

Boys are hard to shop for... we all know that.  You want something they like that isn't too babyish(for older boys) but still stylish.

You can't go wrong with jeans.  I found a rack of jeans marked down from the $10 to $7.99.

Graphic tees? Yes, they have all their favorites!  I especially liked the Halloween shirts and Motor-cross.

Since we are big on sports, I noticed a new line of clothing out that has moisture-wicking and soccer prints.  Basketball too!
