TRAVEL: Texas State Aquarium | @TXStateAquarium #BlogSwap #Texas

Texas State Aquarium
This week, I’m lucky enough to be guest-blogging for Kirstin here at SoCal Kids Outdoor Adventures. Being part of SoCal Lady Bloggers, I was able to sign up and be a part of “Walk a Mile in Another Blogger’s Shoes;” created and organized by the one and only AJ Feuerman who blogs at Confessions of a Fat Girl. Thank you Kirstin and AJ for this fun opportunity!

With spring holidays and summer breaks coming up, many families are traveling all over the country—visiting relatives, seeing sights, and looking for things to do and see. If you happen to be in South Texas—specifically, Corpus Christi—I have a great suggestion for you.

The Texas State Aquarium is a premier non-profit aquarium that showcases the habitats of the Gulf of Mexico. First opening in 1990, it became a federally permitted animal rehab facility in 1993.

I’ve visited the Aquarium several times when I’ve been in the area; and it has grown into a wonderful place to spend the day seeing wildlife and their habitats, while learning how we can protect them.

The day starts with a tour through tanks, showcasing fish, undersea “flower gardens” and the wildlife of the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas. There’s even a great display about the Amazon—with poison dart frogs, boas, spiders and piranhas.

The highlight of the indoor tour is the Islands of Steel tank—125,000 gallons of sea life habitat formed around what looks like an oil platform. It’s full of nurse and tiger sharks, fish, sea turtles and other wildlife that might naturally be found in this type of environment.

Leaving the tank exhibits, you will walk out onto Corpus Christi Bay; out here you can see other sites of the city, including the beautiful skyline, the Bay Bridge and the USS Lexington. There are also some great interactive exhibits and shows at the Aquarium.

From Otter Creek to Eagle Pass, Stingray Flats to Tortuga Cay, you can get up close and personal with almost all the residents. You may even be offered the opportunity to hand feed Atlantic and Cownose stingrays (ask for this opportunity when you purchase your entry tickets).

If you like dolphins, you’ll have to hurry up and wait for a seat for the Dolphin show. This was the most popular part of the aquarium; watching Shadow and Kai, two Atlantic bottle nose dolphins interact with their trainers. Or you can catch a variety of trained birds at the Hawn Wild Flight Theater.

If you’re going to be in town a few days, you may be able to make arrangements to Sleep with the Sharks. Or you can run down the gangway and visit the U.S.S. Lexington; I haven’t had a chance to get over there yet myself.

You can find more information about The Texas State Aquarium here. You can also like them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram and Twitter. Anyway you look at it, you’re sure to have a fun day at the Texas State Aquarium.

Disney's Mock "Dole Whip" Recipe: Quick, Simple and Homemade! | #Disney #Dessert

Being raised in SoCal, I spent much of time at Disneyland.  The rides I love but there are a few items that are must haves in my book. The Dole Whip is my number one purchase!

If you have not had a Dole Whip, really, you haven't been to Disneyland or you are allergic to pineapples.  It is the one dessert that I splurge on while there.  I am not talking about splurging on money, it is precious time that gets used up while in the Dole Whip line.

The line usually wraps through Tomorrowland and past the Jungle Cruise!  Often an hour long wait.  Is it worth it?  Yes!  E.V.E.R.Y. minute.

Since it has been awhile since my last trip to Disneyland, I thought I would experiment and try and re-create the masterpiece at home.  Using only 3-5 ingredients, it took me about 10 minutes to find the right combination to perfect my recipe.

Mock "Dole Whip" at Home Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cans of Cut Pineapple (drain juice)
  • 1/4 cup of 1% low fat milk
    • Add 1/8 cup heavy whipping cream for a creamier texture
    • Substitute coconut milk, soy or almond milk for a vegan choice
  • 2 tsp of sugar, stevia or sweetener of choice
  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  • Food processor or strong blender
Step 1.

Place the pineapple in a zip-lock bag flat (separate the pieces if possible) and freeze.

Step 2.

Break up the frozen pieces of pineapple and insert them into the food processor.  Do NOT over fill, you can make a couple batches and it will seize up with too much at once.

Slowly add the milk, sweetener and lemon to the mixture while thoroughly blending until you reach your desired texture.  (If you want a creamier texture, add a little bit more of your heavy whipping cream)

Step 3.

Put the frozen mixture in a zip-lock bag.  If you want a firm soft serve, place in freezer for 1 hour.  When you are ready to serve, cut a small corner off the bag and gently squeeze the dessert into your desired cup or bowl.

**If you want to make a "float", use the whipping cream in the recipe and float the "Dole Whip" on top of  a glass of pineapple juice.

Enjoy your small piece of Disneyland at home and keep an eye out for more mock Disneyland recipes.

Springtime Petstravaganza: Family Pet Expo at the OC Fair & Event Center | @OCFair #GIVEAWAY

While I usually talk about my two-legged kids, my four legged kids are never far behind in our adventures.  In my house, we have 1 dog, 2 cats and 3 fish.  However, in the past, I have had turtles, birds, rats, hamsters, crawdads, sugar-gliders, snakes and more!

Being a temporarily-retired animal keeper/animal trainer, I have been exposed to many different animals with different needs.  Where can the average family find the right products to take care of our furry families?

Once a year, the Pet Expo visits the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa.  This year, it will be on April 25th - 27th.

It’s the “Bow Wow Wow” and Cat’s Meow for your favorite furry, scaled or feathered friend.

Celebrating 25 years, this “spet-acular” event boasts a menagerie of animals including cats, dogs, miniature horses, birds, and exotic reptiles, all on display providing show guests the opportunity to experience these animals in a variety of different ways.

  • Interactive exhibits
  • Educational shows and demonstrations
  • The latest in pet trends and products for sale
Tickets are on sale now at www.PetExpoOC.org. AFPE kindly reminds guests that the event is for humans only, pets are not allowed at the Expo.
“As our 25th year in Southern California, we’re very proud to continue this tradition of providing exciting, family entertainment while promoting responsible pet care,” said Doug Poindexter, President of the World Pet Association, producers of the America’s Family Pet
Expo.

“Every year the show grows in scope and size, from new product launches, educational seminars to our ever-popular animal adoptions, the Expo has become the ultimate destination for anything pet-related.”

Extreme Canines Dog Stunt Show,” is a high energy, fur-flying show with stunt dogs soaring for Frisbees, high jump flying through the air, jump roping, and running through obstacle courses. Executive producer Chris Perondi’s show is not to be missed.

Repticon will offer guests the opportunity to touch and hold snakes, lizards, spiders , and dozens of other exotic reptiles and amphibians through hands-on demonstrations and exhibits.

Dog Training with Renee. Renee Jones comes from Alabama to teach show guests how to train their four-legged friends basic and complex commands. She is a renowned Certified Professional Dog Trainer – “Knowledge Assessed,” and her Southern flair is a winning combination with canines and owners.

Splash Dogs take to the dock, offering a wet-and-wild canine competition as participating pups compete for the longest jump into the pool!

Who will win the title of Weiner Dog Race Champion? Throughout the weekend guests can watch the Wiener Dog Races as they race to the finish line. The Dachshund traces its roots to Germany over 300 years ago, where they were bred to hunt badgers. These puppies may be petite, but with enthusiasm and encouragement, pick your favorite dog and root them onto victory. This exciting event is presented by Old World Wiener Nationals Dachshund Races.

Interested in how canines are used to protect our communities? At the Police and Protection Dog Demonstrations watch and learn how these K9 Officers and their pup-partners work and play while gaining a deeper appreciation for these canine protectors in our community.

The TICA Cat Show & Presentations allows you to learn about the many breeds of cats and their unique personalities. Do you like to fly with a different crowd? Be amazed while magnificent birds fly when The Birdman of Las Vegas soars into the Expo with a brand-new show.

The Great American Petting Zoo offers several different animals for kids to touch, brush and feed.

  • Tucker’s Pony Rides
  • Human Hamster Wheel and Scooter the Mini Horse are some of the attractions and activities kids will love!
  • Tickled Pink Face Painting so the little ones can “become” their favorite animal.

At the Kid’s Aquarium Contest, each participant receives a 10 gallon aquarium, heater, filter and water and the kids add their own fish and unique decorations. The aquariums will be on display throughout the Expo and are judged according to age group and three categories: Natural and Creative. Every participant is ultimately a winner because after the Expo, each child can bring home their creation. Children are encouraged to sign up for participation in next year’s Kid’s Aquarium Contest. School age kids, 5 to 16 years old are encouraged to participate.

Pet Adoptions will be handled on site for those looking to add a furry member to their family. There will be hundreds of animals hoping to find their “furever home” from local community partner organizations at the Expo.

General Admission $13.00; seniors 60 and over, $11.00. Children 6-12, $8.00. 5 yrs and under, free. Active and retired military free with ID.

Walking With Dinosaurs: DVD/Blu-Ray Giveaway and Printables! | @FHEInsiders #WalkingWithDinosaursDVD

On March 25, my son will be the ecstatic owner of Walking With Dinosaurs as it comes out on Blu-ray™ and DVD then.  However, I surprised him today with being able to watch it on his smart-phone and iPad with the help of MoGo.  He can now watch it on the go along with all of his favorites.

Having the ability to play my kids favorite movies for them while waiting for practices to be over or on long car trips is definitely a relief.  The back-seat arguing and boredom has been drastically changed.  My husband and I are able to have a conversation in the front seat as my kids are now enthralled with their favorite movies.

One of the BEST things about watching the movies on M-GO was the Digital HD is out BEFORE the movies are available on Blu-Ray/DVD!  While most of my kids friends parents are waiting in line at their favorite store for the Blu-Ray/DVD, we have already had the movie for weeks!

We have been sharing printable with him a little bit at a time this week and he was more than ready to see the movie.

The printables are available for you to download below.  Have you seen the movie?  It was so cute and fun for the whole family.  It brought us into the world long past while giving a realistic story of a new favorite character, Patchi.

The fun story-line helped my young children learn about the different dinosaurs.  By the end of the film and extras, they were able to tell me which dinosaurs were herbivores (plant eaters) and which were carnivores (meat eaters).  I was impressed by the fact that they were calling the dinosaurs by their scientific names instead of their story names.  Quite impressive for a 4 and 6 year old!  I couldn't pronounce some of them and they would sound them out.

I loved the way the story taught the kids while making it a realistic fun new world for them to learn about through Patchi, Scowler and Juniper's eyes.

Some of the interactive bonus content includes:

  • The Ultimate Dino Guide” where hatchlings of all ages will be immersed in their own personal journey to uncover the greatest secrets about their favorite dinos.
  • Test your skill by learning a whole new language with “Match the Call,” and hear how Dinos communicated with their friends and foes.
  • Interactive Map” takes the viewer on an interactive tour of where dinos roamed the earth, uncovering the same places people live today.
  • Become a dino expert as you watch the movie and follow along with the pop-up “Brainosaur Trivia Track

Filmed with the latest in cutting edge 3D technology, Walking With Dinosaurs The Movie taps the masterminds behind visual hits like Avatar, using Cameron Pace Fusion 3D technology to fully immerse viewers while recruiting animation house, Animal Logic (The Matrix Trilogy, 300), to bring digital dino magic to life by creating photorealistic dinosaurs based on paleontological research from world experts retained by the BBC.

A little about Walking With Dinosaurs:

The gigantic voice talents of Justin Long (Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise) and John Leguizamo (Ice Age franchise) take you on a thrilling prehistoric journey the whole family will enjoy! In a time when dinosaurs rule the Earth, the smallest of the pack — a playful Pachyrhinosaurus named Patchi — embarks on the biggest adventure of his life. As he tries to find his place in a spectacular world filled with fun-loving friends and a few dangerous foes, Patchi will discover the courage he needs to become the leader of the herd...and a hero for the ages.

Lawn Battleship: Battle on the Lawn! Now Live | @Kickstarter #LawnBattleship #ad

As you know, we are big on camping and the outdoors.  Besides dirt-bike riding, sitting by the camp-fire, gold prospecting, and hiking, we also enjoy camp games.

We play Bocce Ball, Cornhole, Horse-shoes and more.  I was approached recently with a new kind of game that can be played out camping or even just on your own lawn at home.  You know the game Battleship and you know lawn bowling, this new game brings a combination of two in a an exciting family fun game.

Lawn Battleship creates family fun so intense, everyone will ask for the best three-out-of-five to prove who is the true master of your lawn. It’s a family friendly game that relies on accuracy and skill. The concept is simple; toss the ball to disable your opponents fleet; or sink ships with direct hits. To win you must be the last ship standing. Flexible setup gives you control of the challenge level, making this a game for all ages.

Check out how to set up and play, below:

In development, play testing and prototyping for over five years, LAWN BATTLESHIP is now live on Kickstarter with proven game mechanics and final artwork. The Kickstarter campaign features the game at $65, including free shipping to individuals in the United States.

Through their Kickstarter campaign, Lawn Battleship is battling for the funding it needs for mass production. In order to take Lawn Battleship to the next level, they need your support.

Spring Has Sprung at Knotts w/ Knotts Berry Bloom | @Knotts #KnottsSpring

Spring is in the air with all of our warm weather we have been having.  Okay, who am I kidding, we ALWAYS have this great weather!  But seriously, with the little rain we had recently, my grass is growing and the flowers are blooming.

This spring weather makes us want to get outside and have fun!  I feel sorry for all of the rest of the country that is still under sleet and snow but that is why we live in sunny California.

One place that blooms beautifully in Southern California is Knotts Berry Farm!  Have you heard of Knott's Berry Bloom?  From April 12-27, larger-than-life decor, entertainment and boysenberries will be the main focus.

For the second year in a row, Knott's Berry Bloom returns.  Be prepared for larger than life displays of beautiful spring colors, interactive family-friendly activities, expanded gourmet food and wine tasting and more!  New this year, is the Ghost Town Boysenberry Festival.  The festival honors my favorite berry which Knott's Berry Farm was founded on.

This spring, the historic theme park will host the inaugural Ghost Town Boysenberry Festival where guests can:
  • Wine, dine, and buy boysenberry inspired products throughout the winding streets of the Old West.
  • Photo ops at festival entrances which feature rustic banners and oversized boysenberries, just ripe for taking that special photo.
  • Purchase authentic boysenberry plants and preserves from Walter & Cordelia Knott’s Original Roadside Boysenberry Stand.  It will be recreated for the special event.

Wilderness Dance Hall: guests will find a variety of boysenberry inspired gourmet food and wine offerings from around the world. Just outside of the dance hall, towering sculpted topiaries provide shade during warm April days and twinkle brighter than stars at night. Ghost Town will be filled with the mouthwatering aroma of ribs, chicken, and other charbroiled treats smothered with boysenberry glaze and cooked on open-air barbecues throughout the streets of the festival.
  • Local artisans will sell unique boysenberry inspired wares during the festival.
  • On School House Road, guests can try their hand at western themed games with a boysenberry twist! Winners can take home an exclusive Boysenberry Festival prize.
  • And what’s a festival without a pie eating contest? Daily boysenberry pie eating contests will also take place in front of the Birdcage Theater. It’s almost too much fun to stomach.
Strolling the streets of Ghost Town, guests can:
  • Take in special demonstrations including jarringhomemade jam, blacksmithing, and cooking up finger lickin’ homemade boysenberry glazes.
  • Capture the moment and the memories at boysenberry themed stand-in cutouts, each featuring fun historical facts and special moments from Knott’s history. Some will resemble original photo ops from the historic Pitchur Gallery on Main Street.
  • Guests may meet some of the high spirited, fun loving residents of Ghost Town. But watch out for bandits hankerin’ to steal a piece of boysenberry pie.
  • When the sun sets on Ghost Town, the buildings and midways light up in festive boysenberry purple hues. From day to night, Ghost Town has never looked so deliciously fun.
ENTERTAINMENT:
  • When the sun sets, things get krazy when Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies mount their toe tappin’, knee-slappin’, gut-bustin’ country comedy show in front of the Birdcage Theater that has Knott’s audiences clamoring for more! It’s the perfectly krazy end to a day at Knott’s Berry Bloom.
  • Knott’s Berry Bloom also features an extensive line up of live and interactive entertainment. The iconic Charleston Circle fountain transforms into a beautiful floral fountain, adorned with colorful flowers creating an iconic centerpiece for Bloom.
  • Located in the Boardwalk area, the stunning monument will serve as a dramatic backdrop for two spectacular interactive shows.
    • Peanuts Party in the Park returns bigger and more interactive than ever with an all-new rockin’ set list, more Peanuts characters, and tons of fun surprises in Charleston Circle.
    • And this year Knott’s debuts a new night time dance party, Bloomination! After sundown, larger-than- life flowers and butterflies affixed to the Charleston fountain light the night with LED lighting effects; butterfly stilt walkers prance among the crowd, and a DJ spins the hottest dance music for all ages.

CHILDREN:
  • Last year’s guest favorite, the Search for the Easter Beagle returns this year as the Easter Beagle's ENORMOUS Egg Hunt. This year, all five of the interactive Easter Beagle locations will also be prize locations for kids 3-11 years old who are on the hunt for spring time fun. The path will lead explorers to a grand finale meet and greet location with Snoopy in an area of Camp Snoopy created just for this attraction!
  • Near Xcelarator, challenge one another to an oversized game of shuffle board, giant tic tac toe, larger than life bowling, and more at Big Boardwalk Games. This season, Big Boardwalk Games has sprouted new and exciting games, and throughout the day, Sally and Peppermint Patty come out to play along and challenge park guests to some friendly competition. Let the good times roll!
  • In the Camp Snoopy Theatre, the all new musical revue, Flower Power, will showcase the Peanuts pals singing, dancing, and celebrating springtime to cheerful tunes – and they just might invite little ones on stage to celebrate with them! As part of the 30th celebration of Camp Snoopy and renovation of the entire land dedicated to kids, guests will enjoy the show in the comfort of the new audience shade structure!
DANCING:
Guests don’t have to be experts at the cha-cha-cha to enjoy Salsa Dancing in Fiesta Village.

Salsa Dancing Snoopy and his DJ friends will teach everyone the simple steps to dancing like a pro, olé!

HOURS:
Most of the exciting Knott’s Berry Bloom activities are included with admission to Knott’s Berry Farm, which also offers a full day of thrilling coasters and family fun rides, like the all-new Boardwalk attractions and the beautifully restored Timber Mountain Log Ride. Knott’s is open extended hours from 10am to 10pm during Knott’s Berry Bloom, April 12 – 27, 2014 allowing guests extra time to take advantage of all of the limited-time offerings.

Join the conversation by using #KnottsSpring on Twitter and Instagram. For information about the day you plan to visit and available discounts, visit www.knotts.com, call (714) 220-5200, or download the Knott’s Berry Farm mobile app for your smartphone.
