The Warriors Dash
2014
What is my resolution? I was asked to join friends in helping St. Judes by running a 5k unlike any other. I have never ran before. In fact I have NEVER been able to run a full mile without walking!
Why am I doing such an event when I can't run? One reason, the kids. I know of so many families personally that have benefited from their tender loving care and specialists. If those tiny children can fight, so can I!
There may be runners among my readers and if there are, I would love to hear your experiences when you started out. I would also love to hear any tips you might have nutritionally or gear-wise.
This 5k run is called the Warriors Dash. I believe it is called that because of the little warriors that St. Judes Hospital help everyday. This 5k doesn't throw cornstarch at you and turn you colors or run through beautiful scenic landscapes. This run has obstacles such as mud crawls, rope walls and even fire! HELP!
I can't say that I am in the best shape of my life. In fact, I weigh over 25 lbs overweight! It is my hope through these small children that are fighting so hard for their lives that it is time that I myself fight for a healthier life. Not only am I challenging myself to be able to run the 5k but I also want to start living healthier all around.
I started this week by using an app called "Couch to 5K" on my phone. It guides me in interval walk/running and gradually increases to the 5K distance. Another app I have used in the past is called "Zombies..RUN!" If you love the Walking Dead TV show, you will love this running app. You are a character in a world over run with zombies and you have to find survivors and gather supplies while staying one step ahead of the undead. It plays your music from your phone playlist in between story lines and instructs you in intervals much like "Couch to 5K".
I have 3 months to get myself in shape, run over 3 miles, crawl through mud, climb walls and jump through fire! I am going to do my best to finish the 5K not in last place. I have no intentions of trying to have the best time, I only want to do my best.
Please follow my journey and if you want, join me. If you can't join me, feel free to send me words of encouragement. I will need all I can get!
