The Moon will be extra big and bright! This combined with the high tide, means it should be a great night for the grunion run! The grunions should be running between 945-1130pm.
- It will NOT increase the chance of an earthquake
- It will NOT increase that chance of flooding
- It WILL raise the tides SLIGHTLY
What is a Supermoon?
Also known as a perigee moon, the event occurs when a full moon lines up with the Earth and the Sun at a specific point in its orbit, called the lunar perigee. That's the point at which the moon is nearest the Earth as it traces its elliptical path around our planet.
This occurs every year. June 22/23 isn't the only Supermoon this year, in fact there will be another in July. However, the moon is the closest, brightest and biggest it will be until August 2014!
The Supermoon makes for an awesome night sky and it also raises the tides slightly. Being that the Grunion are running this month, they should be spectacular this weekend!
